Persia was internationally renamed in 1935 to Iran, The Persians have always called their region “The land of the Arians”, from which the name “Iran/Aryan” comes. Their language is also referred to as Aryan (Indo-European). The early Persians were one of several Arian tribes that settled in the Iranian plateau. Arian Tribes who emigrated to the west became the ancestors of Greeks and Gernams and people who chose east as their destination came to be known as Indo-Iranians. Today the Persian-speaking peoples constitute one of the largest and most ancient Indo-European linguistic groups in the world. Populations are principally concentrated in Iran (Persia), Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Republic of Azerbaijan, and to some extent Armenia and western Chinese province of Xinjiang etc. Historically the Persian language was a more widely understood international global language and it has been a medium for literary and scientific contributions to the Asian world as well as the Western. It took prominence as the language of culture and education in half of the known world. Beginning in 1843 due to British colonization English gradually replaced Persian in importance on the subcontinent. The Aryans gave Persia its historical name: Airyana. Iran/Aryan (Arian) means “noble” or “honorable”. Today, there are an estimated 226 million native speakers of Persian languages in the world.

Skiing in Persia has a ways to go in terms of international recognition, but there's more than enough there to qualify for some respect. Iran is a mountainous country, and its highest peak reaches a towering 5,671 meters (higher than just about any hill in Europe, except Russia's Mount Elbrus). And where there's elevation, there's usually plenty of pow: up to 7 meters (275 inches) of light, dry snow are reported each season.

Damavand :: The highest mountain in Persia. You will see it when you fly into Tehran

Tehran :: The Mountains of Death - Warning

“You probably haven't heard much about skiing in Persia. You're probably wondering...skiing in Iran? Well, there's this place called Dizin. The snow is always light, dry, champagne powder. You can really rip in it. And, The advanced runs are awesome. I've skied all over the U.S., but this place has a special feel to it. Not to mention 3000 feet of vertical, way up above the tree line. Bowls, bowls, and more bowls. This place rocks, baby! Just whip out your super-sidecuts or your fatties and indulge. No Aspen glitz or glamor. Skiing the way it should be.” /tourist

There are 16 ski resorts in Persia, 3 of which rank among one of the best in the world

Dizin and Shemshak are located in the Alborz mountains north of Tehran. Driving time is about 2.5 hours from the capital city. The road to Dizin is of a very good quality but four wheel drive or chains are required for the last 10 or 12 km when there's snow - which is frequently the case.

If you'd never heard of skiing in Persia, then how about night skiing in Iran. A bit spooky for the terminally paranoid… but the Iranian people are in fact almost universally friendly and welcoming, a lot more so than your average European.

Tochal is located in the Alborz mountains of Persia, 60 km (37 miles) from Tehran. Other information about the resort is sketchy, although it is thought to offer one of the highest ski lifts in the world. Current maps show lifts and the altitude of the nearest peaks, but unfortunately they don't mark the type of lifts or the altitude at the top. It is known that there is an 8 km (5 mile) long gondola lift which must presumably cover a pretty huge vertical. There are also two chair lifts and two T bar surface lifts.
